Old Faithful Inn, a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2012, is one example of how guests can experience the essence of Yellowstone.   Built in 1903-1904 with local logs and stone, the Inn is considered the largest log structure in the world. The towering lobby features a massive stone fireplace and a hand-crafted clock made of copper, wood and wrought iron serving as focal points. With 327 rooms, the Old Faithful Inn is open from early May until mid-October.

On May 28, 1987, The Old Faithful Inn was designated by the U. S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark. This rustic-style lodge, with its log and wood shingle exterior, is adjacent to the world-famous Old Faithful Geyser. The original part of the Inn, known as the "Old House," was completed in 1905 and today, the Inn is an icon of national park architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The immense lobby rises 76 feet and features a massive stone fireplace and a handcrafted clock made of copper, wood, and wrought iron. It’s the most requested lodging facility in Yellowstone National Park. The east and west wings of Old Faithful Inn were added in the early 1900s, with many rooms being remodeled in recent years.

Guest accommodations include rooms with private and shared baths. We stayed in one of the suites on the top floor (3rd) and overlooked the Old Faithful Geyser.  Mary and Bill also had a gorgeous suite with the same view!  Additionally, a full-service restaurant, deli, gift store, and interpretive tours are available at the Inn. The Inn is open from early May through mid-October and closed during the winter.  This inn is also a departure location for different tours.  We were on three during this trip, and I will discuss each of the tours on this website. All were great, and the tour guides were outstanding.

In 2007 the American Institute of Architects conducted a survey to determine the 150 favorite buildings in America; the Old Faithful Inn ranked 36. The Inn, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, is itself part of the Old Faithful Historic District. Old Faithful Inn is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Before we left for this trip, I tried to find out about phone and Internet connectivity by reading many blogs written by past visitors.  Most reports were not encouraging when it came to the Internet.  Fortunately, we had Verizon.  We had great phone service when at the Inn and when visiting other hotels.  However, in much of the park, you can expect "no service."  As for data, while the phone displayed LTE (4G) around the Inn and other hotels, the data speeds was often fractional (less than 1 megabyte).  I was able to get e-mails and text messages, but forget trying to surf the web.  It is painfully slow!  Our friends who were traveling with us had AT&T - and their service was not on par with Verizon.

The Inn is a gorgeous place to stay in the park.  The restaurant is beautiful, and the food is good.  Breakfast buffet was around $16, and the evening buffet was $29.  Of course, you could order from a menu.   There is an ice cream stand and snack bar off the lobby.  There is a nice general store a short walk away from the Inn as well a gift shop.  There are two gas stations in this area - as well as other gas stations throughout the park.

There is no television in the park, and the Internet data signal is too slow to stream any Netflix or other service.   So, leave your big screen TV at home - it will not work in the Park!!!

I will add some pictures of the Inn and the surrounding area below.  Just click on any picture to view a larger version.
