Williams, Arizona is a charming town nestled at the base of Bill Williams Mountain in one of the largest Ponderosa Pine Forests in the world. In a setting like this- it’s no wonder Williams is considered an outdoor paradise.   This town is an extraordinary way to enjoy the Grand Canyon!  It is about an hour's travel time from Williams to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon by vehicle.  However, the real cool way to get to the Grand Canyon is the way we did - by the Grand Canyon Railway!!

We had time to check out part of the town and stroll down the historic Route 66.  We even took a cool buggy ride one evening and learned from the driver all sorts of cool facts about the history of this quaint town.  There is also a zip line ride over Route 66.  Unfortunately, when we got to the ride, it was closed for the evening (whew - lucky for us!!).

Only in Williams will you enjoy the beauty of a mountainside town, the best-preserved stretch of Route 66, outdoor adventure to suit every need, a railway to get you to the Canyon in style, an outdoor drive-thru wildlife park (Bearizona), a true western setting with cowboys swaggering through town, and a friendly atmosphere greeting you the moment you arrive and bidding you farewell when you depart.

We stayed in Williams for three (3) nights at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel.  What a cool hotel with a great buffet!   It was a short walk to the train depot where we took the train up to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  It was about 3 blocks from Route 66, and there was a large "dollar store" across from the hotel's parking lot.

The location of this city is ideal.  One of the cool attractions in Williams is the Bearizona Wildlife Park.  There is a separate page on this website that is focused on this cool park!!

Although Route 66 may not appear on many maps today, the nostalgia and spirit of a bygone era lives on here in Williams, Arizona. Soda fountains, diners, quirky hotels, classic automobiles, and unique shops line the Mother Road just as it was back in the day. With its preservation of an authentic small town atmosphere and history, Williams is the perfect place to “Get your kicks on Route 66” before you visit the Grand Canyon and after!
