My Father's side:

My Father's Mother was born Oddny Indiana Jonsdottir (sometimes incorrectly recorded as Jonsson or Jonasson...see below).  Oddny's family history is as follows:

Oddny's Grandparents (my great-great-grandparents) were:

** Jonas Kristjansson, a farmer in Hringur, Blonduhlid, Iceland.  Died approx. 1882.  He was married to Kristrun Kristjansdottir.  There were (at least) two sons, Jon Jonasson, and Olafur Jonasson:

A.   Jon Jonasson was born July 23, 1857 at Thvera in Blonduhlid, Skagafjardarsysla.  He died March 7, 1922.  A farmer.  He  never left Iceland.  In 1890, he married Gudrun Thora Thorkelsdottir, a midwife and one of the few educated women in Iceland at the time,  born March 6, 1859.  They lived on a farm named Thorleifsstadir in Skagafjordur.  I believe this may have been Jon's second wife.  She died November 5, 1933 (I believe) or 1935 (records differ).

Jon and Gudrun had eight children, all born/raised in Akureyri.   However, there is a question that the first two, Rognvaldur and Johannes, may have been children from either Jon's or Gudrun's previous marriage.  Also worthy of note is that Gudrun had a sister by the name of Oddny Indiana who died as a young child.  And note that Gudrun had a younger brother named Zophonias Thorkelsson who had travelled to Canada prior to Oddny, and had made his fortune making wooden packing boxes.  It is felt that it may have been Zophonias who met Oddny when she arrived in Canada.  Gudrun also had a sister named Jorunn who moved to the US, as well as a sister Svanfridur who moved to Canada and married a man named Gudmundur Eriksson (or Eiriksson), an architect in Vancouver.  (I am still researching this, but I believe he was the father or grandfather of Arthur Erikson, a very well known architect in Canada, indeed the architect for the building that my daughter Gwilyn works in, the Museum of Anthropology at UBC in Vancouver).

The eight children were:

1. Rognvaldur Jonsson (male), born Sept.17, 1884.  Lived in Saudarkrokur.  He married Sigridur Arnadottir.  There were at least two children, Arni and Inga.

2. Johannes Jonsson (male), born July 2, 1888, a farmer in Thorleifsstadir.  He married Malfridur Benediktsdottir.

3. Oddny Indiana Jonsdottir (my grandmother), born per the official records from Iceland on July 12, 1891, but  from the Los Angeles County Death Record, born on June 12, 1891.  She sailed with two girlfriends to Canada at the age of twenty-one (in 1912).  In those days, most Icelandic immigrants arrived via Montreal. I have not yet found her name on a ship's manifesto, so it is unclear what name she traveled under. For simplicity and as so many did, she may have changed her name to Jonsson after her father's name, or Jonasson after her grandfather's name at that time.  In Iceland, Oddny was raised within the Lutheran church.

There are two, and only two stories given regarding why Oddny elected to travel to Canada at the age of nineteen.  Relatives in Iceland have always believed that she traveled due to severe bronchial problems, possibly tuberculosis, which would be relieved with warmer and drier climate, and of course poverty/illness in Iceland at the time was severe.   Oddny herself, consistently gave an account that God had spoken to her at the age of fourteen, telling her to travel to America.  One way or the other, her parents were evidently not in approval of the move.

In Canada, she made her way to Winnipeg where she met and married in approximately 1916, Andres Gudmunder Thordarson, (my grandfather),  born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on September 10, 1892.  Andres was the son of Gudmundur Peter Thordarson and Johanna Sigurdardottir (see Andres'[my father's father's history] below).

Oddny was a skilled cook and seamstress.  Andres was an auto mechanic and a spirited fiddle player, playing for parties, dances and get-togethers. Oddny died May 6, 1980.  She is interred at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills (Murmuring Trees section).  Andres died January 16, 1979.  He is interred at Ocean View Cemetary, Vancouver, BC.

Oddny and Andres had four children:

 a) Victor Holmsteinn (my father, who later legally changed his middle name to James),  born in Winnipeg, November 16, 1917.  Victor died August 1, 2010 at the age of 92.  Victor married Thruda Lillian Backman (my mother), born December 8, 1919, daughter of Kristjan Jens Backman and his wife Sigurlina (nee Johnson).  Thruda died December 17, 2011 at the age of 92.  Victor and Thruda were married on October 30, 1943 in Manasquan, New Jersey, where Victor was stationed at a forces' base. Victor ran his own television sales and service shop until retirement  in Winnipeg.  He acquired his electrical trade from his enlistment with the U.S. Army 222nd Signal Corps and was a veteran of the Second World War. Victor was a member of the Beaver Masonic Lodge and also a member of the Khartum Temple Shriners Skooter Patrol.  Thruda obtained her Music Degree at University of Toronto; and music was her life long love. She became a very well respected piano teacher, teaching many students as they advanced through their examinations. Along with music, her loves were singing, dancing, poetry, and her pets. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of her life

B.    The other known son of Oddny's grandparents (Oddny's uncle) was Olafur Jonasson, born September 24, 1870 (or September 11, 1871..records differ)...  Note, there were 13-14 years between Oddny's father Jon and his brother Olafur.  This suggests that there may be others in between the two......

Olafur was a general farmer, sheep, horses, hay.  Married Helga Margret Sigridur Jonasdottir on November 6, 1894.  They moved to Canada in 1900.  Bought a farm in Arnes, Manitoba (where many Icelanders settled), and named the farm Djupidalur or Floanum.  (They named their farms.) Olafur lost an eye in a hunting accident around age 21, and after that he always wore a black eye patch.  Olafur sold his farm to his son Valdi in 1938.  Helga died March 27, 1932 or 1934 (records differ).  Olafur died September 9, 1949 in Betel Home in Gimli, Manitoba.. Their four children were:

1. Jonas Gisli Olafsson, born August 24, 1895 in Djupidal, Iceland.  Married Thura Johnson in June 1930.  Thura was the daughter of Gudrun Thorvalsdon.  Jonas, with his wife, his wife's mother, his cousin Peter (Oddny's brother), and his father visited Iceland in 1930 for the Thousandth Anniversary of the Althing, the first parliament in Iceland, and probably the first democratic parliament in the world.

2. Oli (Olafur?) Jonasson (note, why Jonasson rather than the correct Olafsson?..becoming westernized?), born September 3, 1903 in Selkirk, Manitoba.  Died December 18, 1961.

3. Eirikur Valdemar Jonasson (again, why not Olafsson?) , born January 21, 1908 at Arnes, Manitoba in a tiny log home.  "Valdi" married Helga in 1938.  He was a farmer in Arnes.

4. Thorey Kristrun Jonasson, born January 21, 1908 at Arnes in the same tiny log home.  Married Fred Tommila in approximately 1936.  Fred was a farmer in Elma, Manitoba. He died in 1993.  Thorey died February 14, 1999.  (Thorey and Oddny kept close communication. But to confuse the family tree, Thorey referred to Oddny as "Auntie Oddny", rather than the correct "Cousin Oddny".)   Thorey and Fred had four children:

          a) Grace Helga, married Ivan Bjorklund in 1958, a mechanic for a pulp and paper company in Ignace, Ontario.  Grace and Ivan have four children, Naomi, Zoe, Tim and Peter, all  married, and have five grandchildren.  [Grace has provided some family information].

Gudrun died November 21, 1871, a week after her eighth child was born.  Their eight children were:

Vickie

Acknowledgment:  The family history data was substantially compiled by Vickie who did an outstanding job in tracing the Thordarson family history.  My role was to convert her research to a format viewable on the web for all of the Thordarson and related family members to enjoy - and to add pictures to supplement Vickie's historical research. This is a living website - updated as new family members are born, and our loved ones pass away.

Please feel free to keep Vickie updated with family updates and other information to help keep the website current. She will let me know what changes need to be made.  I will make updates as new information becomes available on our U.S. extended family.    Family pictures are always welcome and will be added.  Please submit them, together with a descript and approximate time period, to dicknorton@gmail.com - and please submit them in a JPG format.  Dick Norton
