FAMILY LINE

History

SYDNEY MONROE NORTON was born on November 11, 1889 in San Bernardino, California, and died on February 22, 1973 (struck by a car) in Alameda.

He married BERTHA LORENA NORTON (his first wife).  She died June 20, 1913.  They had a child, LORENA OLIVE NORTON, who was born (and died....) on June 1, 1913.

He later married MARJORIE FRANCES MILLER HANLY on September 30, 1929.  She died on November 15, 1957 in Oakland, California. 

Offspring

MARJORIE had two children by a former marriage:

• JACK HANLY (he married JUNE).  JACK retired from the Crocker Bank and lived in Alameda.  He helped HELEN with business matters in her last years and was her executor.  JACK died in 2001.

  • They had one daughter, JANET

• EVELYN HANLY CLARK (she married JACK CLARK, and they had two children).

History

ROBERT SAMUEL NORTON was born on July 5, 1891 in San Bernardino, California, and died on September 6, 1973 in Los Gatos.  He married NADINE MADSEN (born in Fresno on 12/15/1896)  on June 20, 1917.  NADINE died on February 17,1967.

Offspring

ROBERT and NADINE had the following children:

• ROBERT SAMUEL NORTON, JR., born on August 22, 1918 in Alameda, CA.  He died on 2/17/1998.

  • ROBERT married MARY DICKEY on October 22, 1944 in Vallego, Mary's home.  They had one child - ANNE ELIZABETH NORTON, born on January 27, 1953. Anne married Donald Belton Ayer at Stanford on 10/16/1978.  They have two children: Christopher (born 1/7/1982) and Alison (born 10/12/1985).  Alison married David Heyman.   Mary died on 5/19/1996. 

• THEODORE "TEDDY" MADSEN  NORTON, born August 24, 1922 in Alameda, CA. He never married.  He was a distinguished lawyer.  His background as provided in a law journal paper was as follows:  BA., 1947, LL.B., 1949, Stanford University; M.A., 1955, Ph.D., 1960, University of Chicago; Associate Professor, San Jose State College; Chairman, Planning Commission, City of Saratoga, California; member, California Bar.

   I was informed by Stephen Rule, Teddy's nephew,  on February 23, 2013, that Teddy passed away on February 7, 2013 in Los Gatos, California at the age of 90.  A memorial service was held in Saratoga at St. Andrews episcopal church on March 23, 2013 at 1 pm.  Interment was at Madronia Cemetery, Saratoga, CA.

• NANCY NADINE NORTON, born on February 10, 1926 in Alameda, CA.  She died of stomach cancer at a relatively young age on 10/3/1967.  .

  • NANCY married WILLIAM SYLVESTER RULE on July 17, 1948 in Los Gatos.  They had two boys, ROBERT (born 8/3/1958) and STEVEN (born 8/13/1960).  Bill survives and has re-married.
    • ROBERT RULE married and quickly divorced - no children.
    • STEVEN RULE married MARTHA HIRSCH (born 2/8/1962) on 9/16/1989 in Sacramento, her home.  They have two children:  Sean (born 5/5/1994) and Melissa (born 5/28/1997).

ALFRED JACKSON NORTON was born on December 27, 1893 in San Francisco, California, and died on September 1, 1967 in Vista, California.  He married RUTH CATHERINE KRAMER(date unknown, but we believe in the 1920's), who died December 7, 1972 in Oceanside, CA.  They had lived in Los Angeles for many years, then moved to Vista.  They had no children.

ISAAC NORTON (aka "HAROLD") was born on November 27, 1897 in San Francisco, California, and died on August 20, 1957 in San Jose.  HAROLD married ALICE CLAIRE KOREEL (born 11/28/1900) on December 8, 1920 in Alameda, California.  ALICE died on September 28, 1958 in Los Gatos, CA.

Offspring

HAROLD and ALICE had the following children:

• TYLER KORELL NORTON, born on May 18, 1922 in Alameda, California.  Tyler passed away on February 5, 2011 at his home in La Jolla. Tyler played football at Stanford University.  He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Navy during WWII serving in the Pacific Theater as a Communications Officer.  After the war, he moved to Manila where he met his wife, Josephine ("Jody").  They were married in 1954 in La Jolla. They returned to Manila where they raised their three daughters. After living there for 20 years, they moved to La Jolla where Tyler owned and operated La Jolla Hardware.

  • TYLER married JOSEPHINE "JODY" HAYDEN STAPLER (born 9/24/1929) on July 10, 1954 in La Jolla, CA.  They had three girls, all born in Manila.  All three are or have been married, and each has two children:

    • ABBIE, born Feb 16, 1956

      • Hayden

      • Gerhard Ban Andel

    •  MARILYN ALICE,  born March 27, 1959.  She married BRAD ORR.

      • Sheila

      • Tyler

    • BEVERLY CLAIRE, born May 19, 1964.  She married CURTIS ITTNER'S/

      • Madaline

      • Jack

• MARILYN ALICE NORTON, born on September 7, 1928 in Alameda, California.

  • MARILYN married GEORGE McPHEE (born 10/10/1926) on September 30, 1950 in Los Gatos.  They have two children: 

    • SHANNON (born 8/17/1952).  She married EUGENE ZECH (born 12/22/1947) on 8/7/1976 in Burlingame.  They have two sons:

      • Bryan (born 1/7/1981)

      • Jeffrey (born 1/18/1984)

    •  ROBERT (born 10/2/1954).  He married JANET JACKSON (born 10/24/1956) on 5/8/1987 in Laguna Niguel.  They have one son:

      • Miles (born 12/18/1992)
